Context

The work and the company

Lornets works with organisations when software has become commercially or operationally important and the engineering underneath it needs to be understood, strengthened or changed. We are always interested in experienced engineers who can move comfortably between technical assessment and hands-on production engineering.

The role

What this role is

You will work across unfamiliar production systems, establish what can genuinely be relied on, identify where engineering intervention is justified, and help take those systems to a stronger technical position. The work may involve assessing a product ahead of enterprise growth or technical diligence, strengthening an increasingly critical platform, improving reliability and recoverability, or helping execute a justified architectural or platform transition. This is not a narrow infrastructure or DevOps role. You will work across the system.

What you will do

Responsibilities

  • Assess existing applications, infrastructure and delivery environments
  • Review architecture, code, data flows and operational dependencies
  • Investigate reliability, recoverability, scalability and performance
  • Review deployment pipelines, infrastructure and change controls
  • Identify material technical risks and distinguish them from acceptable engineering debt
  • Turn findings into proportionate engineering decisions
  • Implement or lead remediation where appropriate
  • Improve observability, resilience and production operations
  • Support migrations and architectural transitions where the evidence justifies them
  • Produce clear technical conclusions that can stand up to scrutiny from engineering leaders and clients
  • Work directly with founders, CTOs and engineering teams

What we are looking for

Experience and qualities

You should be an experienced software or platform engineer with strong production judgement. We are particularly interested in people with depth across several of the following: backend and distributed systems, system architecture, cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or GCP, containers and infrastructure as code, CI/CD and release engineering, relational and non-relational databases, observability and incident investigation, reliability and disaster recovery, performance and scalability, authentication, access control and application security fundamentals, migrations and platform modernisation.

You should be comfortable entering a codebase you did not build, understanding how the system actually behaves, and forming an evidence-based technical view rather than recommending a rewrite by default.

Strong written communication matters. Part of the job is explaining what the evidence shows, why it matters and what should happen next.

We care more about engineering judgement than a checklist of technologies. You should know when to keep something, when to refactor it and when replacement is genuinely justified.

You should also be comfortable saying that something is good enough when the evidence supports that conclusion.

Honesty

This probably is not the right role if

  • Your experience is primarily limited to maintaining CI/CD pipelines, administering cloud infrastructure, or implementing tickets within a single technology stack.
  • This is unlikely to suit someone who instinctively reaches for a rebuild before understanding the existing system.

How we work

Independence in technical judgement

Lornets separates assessment from the obligation to sell remediation. Our principle is simple: Assess first. Keep what works. Change only what the evidence justifies. Engineers are expected to preserve that independence in their technical judgement.

How to apply

Apply

Send us your CV or LinkedIn profile and briefly describe one production system you had to understand, diagnose or strengthen. Tell us what initially appeared to be the problem, what evidence you gathered, and whether that evidence changed your view.

We keep this role open and speak with strong engineers as we find them.
